It’s not guesswork which has led to Ninemeister understanding what makes a 9m Porsche 911 engine out-perform our rivals, it is our 30 years of mechanical engineering know-how, thousands of hours of computer simulation and 25 years of hands on experience combined which gives us a unique knowledge of how to make the 911 engine work.
Doing what we love
The result of this vast investment of time and resources means we also know exactly what makes 911 engines not work! This knowledge and experience is the bedrock of the Ninemeister Porsche engine rebuild programme. We find nothing more satisfying that completing the installation of another perfect Ninemeister engine build and hearing the engine fire up on the first turn of the key. We love building perfect standard and high performance 911 road and race engines for our customers all around the world, but please don’t think that our skillset ends there. The Ninemeister Porsche engine rebuild program not only includes all the natural aspirated and turbocharged air cooled 911, 930, 964 and 993 variants, we also rebuild the 996, 997, 986 & 987 Boxster and Cayman water cooled Porsche engines to the same exacting standards.
The knowledge required to design and manufacture new components for the Porsche 911 engine means that you have to fully understand the fundamental workings of the 911 engine and just as Porsche refined their engines and vehicles through racing, Colin has done likewise. His 450hp 9m Racing engine powered 993RS won four consecutive Porsche Club Speed Championships with two outright victories setting new track records along the way – many records which still stand to this day.
We understand that everybody wants to know what the job will cost before we start so we have set fixed labour only prices for rebuilding the following engines:

Please note these prices exclude the cost of removal and refitting of the engine and the cost of all parts including gaskets and consumables
In addition to the cost or removal & refitting of the engine & consumables customers should typically budget for the following items:
• Engine gasket set
• Bearings (crank, big end, little end, intermediate shaft)
• Timing chains, guide ramps, tensioners
• Pistons, cylinders & rings
• Valves, guides, springs, retainers
• Camshafts & cam followers
• Engine gasket set
• IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing failure
• Crankshaft or connecting rod failure
• Cylinder scoring (especially 996 & 997 3.6 & 3.8)
• Piston scuffing & damage
• Cylinder ovality and cracking
Strip down and evaluation
Each Ninemeister Porsche engine build is treated on an individual basis. Our customers appreciate that without a crystal ball we cannot provide a fixed price for the engine rebuild until we fully strip the engine and have the opportunity to evaluate every internal component; crankshaft, bearings, oil pump, heads, valves all come under our scrutiny and no item is left to chance.
Following this inspection the customer is invited to see for themselves the issues we have discovered (personally or via email photographs), we will make our recommendations for essential problem rectification to effect a guaranteed and reliable repair and likely provide secondary recommendations to future-proof the engine. It is then customer’s choice of how far we go with the job.
Rebuilt engine testing
Wherever possible we prefer to carry out before and after chassis dyno tests for all Ninemeister engine rebuilds to ensure optimal performance and final set up. Once given the all-clear, the car is road tested & fault cleared prior to collection to ensure that no ancillary problems exist during normal driving conditions.
Ninemeister dyno testing
Pride of place in the 9m Racing workshop is our Bosch FLA203 chassis dyno, made by the same company that has been supplying fuel injection and electrical equipment to Porsche since 1972. The Ninemeister dyno has been in use for nearly 20 years and has been the bedrock for proof testing all of the 9m Racing engine packages and conversions. In 2005 the dyno was upgraded with a Dynostar DAS control & data acquisition system which runs their ADS advanced dyno software, a package which enables us to compare any of the thousands of dyno tests that we have done since its installation.
Safe reliable testing
The Ninemeister dyno has an Integrated air management solution specifically engineered to provide enough cooling air to run high horsepower air cooled Porsche 911 engines. Designed and installed by Integrated Air Systems, two independent axial fans are employed; one to deliver a 70mph clean air supply from outside the building and down onto the rear deck of the 911 to keep the engine breathing clean, fresh air; the other to remove hot cooling air and exhaust gas from under the engine and reject it on the opposite side of the building. This specially designed solution has made an invaluable contribution to the 9m Racing Porsche 911 engine tuning programme because it allows us to run engines in the same environmental conditions that they would experience at high speed on the road, thus providing consistent & repeatable results over an extended test period.
