When it comes to choosing the right wheel for your Porsche I am sure that most people will simply pick the wheel which they think looks the best. Obviously there is nothing wrong with that decision as we all want our cars to look great, however to make your car go faster you should consider more aspects other than looks before you make your final choice.
Size matters (usually).
Optimising cornering force is the way to improve performance with a new wheel & tyre combination but that does not necessarily mean that you have to buy the largest ones that you can fit under your wheel arches. Since larger wheels (and tyres) also weigh more we have to play a balancing act between size and weight.
The weight of the road wheels has a noticeable effect on the performance for three reasons: firstly reducing the un-sprung weight of the wheel/tyre combination can improve the control of the suspension and secondly engine power is required to overcome the rotational inertia of all parts of the drive train and finally power is also required to overcome the vehicle inertia due to the mass of the whole car when cornering, accelerating or braking. For maximum performance you should simply select the lightest possible wheel for your Porsche which is exactly why the engineers at Weisach specified magnesium wheels for the 964RS.
Strength, reliability, lifespan, safety and maintenance are all major considerations to which we pay high regard with respect of wheel choice. For us the best choice is a wheel which looks great, is easy to clean, requires only visual inspection for maintenance, is strong, is light and above all else is safe to use for long periods. Our performance wheel of choice is the Rays.
Made from a single piece of aluminium alloy, forged and flow formed, the Rays Porsche fitment wheels have proven to be one of the strongest and most reliable wheels in motorsport and are specified by Williams Formula 1 and Porsche Motorsport (997GT3RS-R and 991GT3RS-R). It’s hence not difficult to understand why Ninemeister selected Rays wheels as our number one performance choice, Rays wheels come in two styles, bolt or centrelock fixing (for 997GT3RS), in 18”, 19” and 20” diameters and in widths between 8.5” and 12” to suit the majority of Porsche applications.
